Madeleine’s Garden

A Journey Through Time and Resilience

Tour Overview

Our journey will take us through the Heritage Garden, showcasing the intricate French style of gardening, and the provisional gardens that tell the often untold story of the enslaved and indentured servant women who tended these lands. We’ll also embark on a foraging walk through Roma’s Heritage Trails, discovering the past from a unique and profound perspective.

Start of the Tour: The French Influence

We begin at the entrance of the Heritage Garden, reflecting the grandeur of eighteenth-century French gardening. Inspired by the magnificent gardens of Versailles, these plots embody the principles of logic, order, discipline, and beauty.

Encounter with Madeleine

As we venture further, you will be introduced to Madeleine, a gardener representing the indentured and enslaved women who toiled these lands. Through her narrative, visitors will gain insight into her hopes, the stark choices she faced, and the perpetual challenges she and her peers overcame. Madeleine’s tale provides a human connection that breathes life into the historical landscape of Roma at Three Rivers.

Inclusive and Diverse Perspectives

During our time with Madeleine, we’ll explore the lives that flourished here, not just those of the wealthy and privileged, but also the narratives of the indentured and enslaved. Our guides will narrate how, under the moonlight, these resilient individuals cultivated their small yet vital gardens—a stark contrast to the opulence of the French formal gardens.
