Our Story
Keeping History Alive
Three Rivers Roma Inc. is dedicated to preserving, celebrating, and sharing the rich cultural heritage and historical significance of the Jean-Pierre Roma at Three Rivers National Historic Site and the broader Three Rivers area. The site, which received national distinction in 1933, honours the settlement and trading post established by Jean-Pierre Roma in 1732, a pivotal development that strengthened the French presence on Prince Edward Island.
“This road is not as well worked as the other one … most of the trees lying on the ground across the road have been left where they lie, since it is easy enough to step over them” – commented Jean Pierre Roma about the road built between Trois Rivières and Port la Joye. (from Jill MacLean’s book on Roma)
Since its inception in 2004, Three Rivers Roma Inc., a not-for-profit charitable organization, has owned and operated the Roma at Three Rivers site. This remarkable achievement is largely due to the dedication of a local volunteer Board of Directors. These volunteers have worked tirelessly over the years, ensuring the site’s preservation, accessibility, and vibrancy. Without their passion and commitment, the site would not be the thriving historical destination it is today.
During the peak season, the Roma site comes to life thanks to the efforts of a dedicated team of 10 summer staff members. Visitors can delve into the rich history and culture of the early French/Acadian settlers through immersive hands-on experiences, demonstrations, and guided tours provided by costumed interpreters. The site plays a crucial role in preserving and celebrating early French/Acadian culture on PEI, attracting visitors from near and far to experience the stories and traditions that shaped this region.
The Jean-Pierre Roma at Three Rivers National Historic Site stands as a testament to the power of community and the enduring spirit of its volunteers. Their collective efforts have transformed a vision into a living, breathing tribute to shared heritage, offering experiences that educate and inspire all who visit.
